So..... someone tried to MT Lu Bu

It was brought to my attention that someone wanted to MT Lu Bu, said he could chug out 2-3 chapters a day using MT and posted the 'retranslated' first chapter on Wuxiaworld's forum. There's just a couple things I don't get as to why they'll pick My Father in Law is Lu Bu....

1) My Father in Law is Lu Bu isn't that popular compared to some other light novels

2) My Father in Law is Lu Bu is harder to translate compared to some other light novels

3) Why would you think machine translation of My Father in Law is Lu Bu would work?

and.... after reading their translation

4)If you're going to machine translate, why did you produce a lower quality version of my translated chapter 1 while totally copying my translation sometimes? That's right, 'justice warriors' was something that my girlfriend decided to call them when she edited the chapter... also, did you have to post the second half of my translation unedited with your own like that? Bro, at least try?!

5) okay bro, don't go around changing my "SHA" warcry into "KILL" even though it's the same. SHA sounds a lot better than KILL!

6) and good luck chugging 2-3 chapters of MT a day.

ps. thanks for being interested in Lu Bu.

  1. I love when translators put in oddball names like justice warriors and then catch someone ripping off their translations with it.

  3. I understand why this story isn't that popular, 200 or so chapter and most of it is battle conflict.

    1. Sorry bro/sis for commenting, is not 3 kingdoms all about battle, war of words with almost no romance in itself?

  4. eh i like this ln and think your translation of it makes it all the more enjoyable. so i can wait a week or so for a good translated chapter, then 1 day for a chapter that i feel like puking blood from reading. XD

  6. You hit all the point, James. It's true,

MT of this novel will be suck, big time. There are some WN that can be MTed close to readable form, this isn't one of it.

On other side, I actually can understand why this project will become more and more popular. In chinesse it probably won;t be that much popular, I mean, Three Kingdom stories are too familiar there. In english, this is different case.

I can say, that I follow pretty much every WN/LN translation linked from http://aho-updates.com/ and I found "My father in Law is Lu Bu" are quite unique among the countless stories of being transported to MMORPG/fictional fantasy.

Thanks for bringing a bit of fun into this boring and stressful live, James. Each chapter is more refreshing and entertaining than a bottle of beer, just imagine of buying thousands of people a free beer, every time you publish a chapter.

  11. I know how you feel man. I feel the same about She Who Professed Herself The Wiseman's Apprentice (which I translated as The Sage Who Calls Herself the Sage's Apprentice). I found that LN earlier than Sheeprabbit. But when Sheeprabbit translated the teasers sometime in March/April, I had no problem with it because Sheeprabbit is good with Japanese. But then someone else took over and MTL it.

I loved Mira so much. I've been bubbling with excitement to translate Kenja when I return hom. But to see my beloved Mira taken away and raped by MTL, that was unforgivable and flew me into rage.

The people at Re: Translation IRC channel can vouch that I found Kenja way in 2014, the only reason I didn't translate it was because I was in Afghanistan and I was still learning Japanese. With Endo's help, I painstakingly managed to finish chapter 1 and 2, but I didn't publish it because I wanted to release it together from prologue to chapter 3 in one go. Then I found Sheeprabbit's teaser, and I said, ok, I can compare and improve my translation. Then I found the link to the MTL and I flew into rage.

The re:translation guys as well as Sheeprabbit told me to just release my own proper version, but I was too angry that I swore off translating Kenja. Even looking at Kenja's book cover makes me very angry now. I love Mira, but I can't tolerate MTL's rape of Kenja.

    1. Starting from Chapter 14, it's not MTL anymore, someone with actual Japanese language is translating the actual chapters now.

    2. Poor you. How dare someone not be considerate of unpublished and unknown chapters of the series you started translating. The nerve!!!
Re:Translations is the only group I have zero respect for, but they were right, annoying elitists that they are. You should have just released it instead of complaining about a project you delayed while in another country. James' project was 100% poached. Your situation wasn't even close. Sick of these translators who think all leechers are stupid and will agree with whatever "outrages" them.

  12. MTLing "My Father in Law is Lu Bu" ? Lol, good luck. I admit sometime (often) i got impatient, and try to read a Machine translated web novel. Some WN are nearly readable some aren't. "My Father in Law is Lu Bu" is in later category.

Don;t let this stunt bother you, James.

  13. Just let him translate Lu Bu while you translate something else much better. I like you James but Lu bu is a boring ass novel your time should be spent on a much better novel. Hold a poll many people will let you know much better xinia/wuxia novels

  15. I would say that it is quite hard to translate this novel (especially MT) since
1st : you need to know most of terminology of Romance of the Three Kingdom.
2sd: i find out in the raw that this novel have fairly high number of word with lots of stroke and meaning.Well my country had absurd number of Chinese novel (especially Wuxia) so i know a little Chinese ,not enough to translate though.
3rd:You need to have a certain understanding of that language in order to translate/MT (no matter what language) and from what i see, that guy's knowledge isnt good enough.
